The airplanes I fly are miniature versions of full size airplanes, they have all the flight functions that a full size airplane has, including retractable landing gear. The difference is, they are flown from the ground using a radio transmitter.
Most of my models are built from kits using Balsa wood or fiberglass, countless kits are available on the market. For models not available in kit form, they can be Scratch Built from plans. Models can also be designed on your PC using CAD tools, these tools produce plans from which models can be built.
Models range in size from very small, that can be flown indoors or at a local park, to models that are 50% the size of the full size airplane, or larger. My primary interest is Giant Scale, most of my models have at least a 7 foot wing span, the largest having a 12 foot wing span.
What I enjoy the most about flying is that each model retains the flight characteristics of the full size airplane, so a Piper Cub flies very much different than a fighter such as a P-51 Mustang. Very few pilots of full size airplanes can ever fly the variety of airplanes that can be built and flown in model form.
